Davis opts for comfort over brands when it comes to spending on clothes for himself. "I have no problem spending RM2,000 on a Louis Vuitton bag for someone else but the most that I'll spend on myself is RM500. I don’t have a preference over any specific brands," he says. "If you feel comfortable in what you wear, you should be able to pull off whatever style you want" he adds.

DARE TO BE DIFFERENT You won't be turning any heads unless you're creative with your pairing, advises Chabom Chan, Senior Fashion Stylist at TANGS. Try matching a white or black shirt and black shorts with an elegant piece of accessory, or for a more polished alternative - match a fine-fitting white shirt and black pants with a pair of bold-colored shoes.
FRED PERRY LAUREL polo shirt (RM475) at M Men 03-2283 2102, FEDERATION shorts (RM230) at Matériel 03-2164 9381
Where will you find Davis shopping? "I'm always on the look out for cheap bargains," he says. "I like to shop at Sungei Wang when I'm looking for a bargain and some exclusive local designer pieces, and also places that offer a good choice of brands and styles," says Davis. "So usually you can find me in the Bukit Bintang area, Mid-Valley and 1-Utama."
DON'T BE BORING Unless you're an accountant or banker, there's no reason to go for a plain, unadorned white shirt. Instead, opt for a narrow collar shirt accented with some intricate detailing and wear it with a pair of black shorts or jeans to radically improve your style, says Chan.

Before embarking on a career as a model in Malaysia three years ago, Davis led a less glamorous lifestyle. "I had a solid job in a finance company and everything was great, well, good, in the UK," says Davis. "So when a friend asked me if I ever considered modeling, I thought nothing of it. It wasn't until five or six months later when I decided I needed a change and took a couple of months of holiday in the UK before relocating to Malaysia to pursue a career in modeling."
BLACK ON WHITE Black on white, on the other hand, isn't as simple. Why? Making white pants work can be quite a task. Ng suggests keeping the top uncomplicated but substantial – a refined jacket and an immaculate stripped white shirt, for example.

The drastic career (and lifestyle) move wasn't decided on the flip of the coin. He knew he had experience on his side to make the leap a success. "I took a lot of the people skills I garnered from my previous job away with me and brought it into modeling," says Davis. "And with acting, I was able to apply my modeling skills, like how to be in front of the camera, and knowledge from doing TV commercials."
SPLASHES OF SURPRISE Adding splashes of colors – like light blue, pink or yellow – helps accentuate the modest combination. But remember: To avoid snide remarks, contrast and toughen so colors with rough fabrics like a pair of rugged black jeans, says Ng.

A competent shopper has an eye for worthy investments – that's why we've identified some time-defying items so you can stay stylish in tough times. Read on for; fashion cues by Sell Out! star Peter Davis, finding the right product for your hair, and class tips on matching the two neutrals of black and white.
SOPHISTICATED MEN WEAR BLACK AND WHITE BY JOHN NG

Fashion definitely requires us to be flexible to change. Peter Davis, who recently took on his first-ever acting role in Yeo Joon Han's award-winning debut film, Sell Out! (which opens in May), attests to that. "As a model, I get different types of clothes thrown at me all the time," he says. "So I'm used to trying different things every now and then. I'm going through the skinny jeans phase at the moment."
WHITE ON BLACK Wearing white on black is easier than the other way around. But it might say waiter if you're not careful. Match the mix with either a striking watch or tie to exude a convincingly professional appearance, says fashion designer, Key Ng.

How to wash your jeans properly
The most frequently worn item in your wardrobe requires slightly more attention than you may think. We asked Christine Wong, Manager at Pressto (03-2141 3236), Jalan Imbi, to talk about washing jeans the right way.
STEP 1 Empty the pockets of your jeans. To keep abrasion to a minimum and prevent their colors from fading, turn them inside out.
STEP 2 Set your washing machines on gentle mode. Put your jeans into the washer when it's ready. "Avoid overloading your washer because doing so can cause damage to your clothes and washing machine, not to mention your jeans won't be cleaned properly," says Wong.
STEP 3 Once the machine cycle is completed, hang them at the waist with clippers to dry. "Do not hang your jeans in the direct sunlight," says Wong. Proper drying time takes approximately one to two days depending on the weather.Labels: Looks |

Roll up your pants
Believe it or not, this uncomplicated and seemingly trivial move can make a noticeable difference to your overall appearance. Rolling up a pair of jeans, for instance, gives a rakish appeal to the casual slacks while saying, "I'm not your average jeans guy." How far up should the hems be folded? Keep them about an inch or two above your ankles. Anything above that and you'll look like a fisherman. The look has to be styled correctly, affirms fashion designer, Justin Yap. Whether it's a pair in plain black or faded blue, make sure it's slim-fit and not loose. Besides jeans, the roll-up also works on khakis. Wear it with a T-shirt or tucked shirt, with or without socks. Add a pair of simple, patterned socks for a neater look. Make sure it's nice and new, not old and raggedy.

Color therapy needn't be the refuge of bleary-eyed hippies. Here are six ways in which a splash of color will improve your life
 1. WALLS Putting up some orange can galvanize your brain. "Studies show people are more productive in orange rooms," says color specialist Mark Wentworth (colorforlife.com). "It's a useful mix of energizing red and creative yellow, so it can boost energy levels." This should hopefully stop you wasting your time on Facebook.
2. SHIRT Make it blue. Research by the University of Alberta in Canada shows this simple choice can make your blood pressure drop. "And it gives the impression you're a loyal, consistent and moderate thinker," says color therapist Jean Andrew (clearskyholistics.com).
3. SCREENSAVER Vote green for your screen. "Research shows that it calms and reassures us," says Wentworth, "probably because when our ancestors saw a sea of lush greenery, they knew they weren't going to starve." Andrew agrees: "Green is great for a balanced, calm view."
4. TIE Ever wondered why Blair, Bush et al sport red ties? Studies by the University of Rochester in the U.S. found that red signals dominance. "A red tie asserts authority, especially with a black suit," says Andrew. "It makes the wearer appear more assertive."
5. REPORT If you want your boss to take notice, give your presentation a yellow cover: "Studies show this improves concentration and makes people take notice," says Andrew. "That's why yellow is used for legal pads." And why you can't look the girl from accounts in the eye when she's wearing that mustard V-neck.
6. INK If you want to be enigmatic, stay on the black path. "Black is all colors absorbed and narrows your silhouette," says Suzy Chiazzari, author of The Complete Book of Color. Cornell University in the U.S. found it to be the color of "authority and power." Perfect for "hands off" notes in the fridge.Labels: Health, Looks |

Making scents of different environments By John Ng
Your lifestyle plays a significant role when determining the type of scent you should wear. Here are a few tips to help you find what you need:
- For black tie events, look for a fragrance with herbal (patchouli, sage) and woody (vetiver, sandalwood, musk) notes, says Jennifer Mullarkey, the vice-president for fragrance development at Ralph Lauren fragrances. "These scents are confident and empowering making you stand out at formal functions."
- "If it's more of an active life you lead, go with fresh citrus and floral scents," says Mullarkey. "The combination of the two will remind you of sunny days and the great outdoors."
- Unsure to wear for a casual outing? "Your best bet is a fragrance with fruity notes (apple, mandarin, bergamot) or oriental ones (vanilla, cinnamon, clove)," says Christine Siew, sales and training manager of Aramis and Designer Fragrances.
- For work environment, keep the scent to anything not spicy," Siew says. "The spicier scents are pepper, ginger and nutmeg."
Fragrances, top from clockwise:
1. Tommy Hilfiger, Hilfiger (RM180) 50ml. Refreshing fruity and floral notes.
2. Kenzo Power (RM215) 60ml. Spicy top with middle notes of coriander, bergamot and cardamom and woody base.
3. Emporio Armani, Diamonds for Men (RM180) 50ml. Aromatic and woody.
4. Burberry, The Beat for men (RM213) 50ml. Energizing with notes of leatherwood, vetiver bourbon and violet leaves.
5. Ralph Lauren, Romance men (RM185) 50ml. Sensual blend of exotic spices, woods and musck.
6. Dolce & Gabana, The One for men (RM210) 50ml. Seductively warm oriental floral with a fruity appeal.

Self maintenance of nails be tricky and often results in an unkempt look. If you're going for the clippers...make sure you know the drill.
Step 1 The function of nails is to protect the nail beds. So never cut your nails too short, and ensure you leave sufficient free edge to protect nail beds.
Step 2 Trimming the delicate cuticles should be left to the trained nail therapists because they can easily get cut. Use a cuticle oil to hydrate the ragged and out-of-control cuticles.
Step 3 Exfoliate your hands with a scrub to remove dead skin cells before applying a vitamin-rich hand lotion.
Step 4 Finish off by applying a treatment such as Matte 4 Men (RM55 from the Nail Parlour) that help to maintain healthy and resilient nails.Labels: Looks |

Nailing It
Do you have grubby nails and even worse looking feet? It's time to take a leaf from your girl's book and get some professional help.
BY JOHN NG
THE GROOMING OF THE CUTICLES AND NAILS - manicures and pedicures, are not only cosmetic. In fact the treatments actually promote proper nail growth and may prevent hand and feet conditions such as corns, cracked skin, as well as detect symptoms of ingrown nails and other related problems.
Hygiene first Visiting nail salons where good hygiene isn't taken seriously is as perilous as walking barefoot in locker rooms. You subject yourself to the risk of contracting one of the infectious bad guys. Choose a salon which practices thorough and consistent sanitation of the stations, equipments, and the clients' and therapists' hands, advises Lim May Shen, owner of The Nail Parlour (03- 26984908). "In terms of the therapists – she must be confident in handling the tools, able to explain exactly what are the procedures and advise you on any of your nail concerns," adds Lim. "Most importantly, she should demonstrate good hygiene practices."
Step-by-step A manicure and pedicure normally entails: soaking your hands and feet in warm water, trimming the nails, cleaning the cuticles, filing, shaping, buffing and massage. After the massage, the therapist will apply a strengthening base coat to protect and nourish the nails. Finally, cuticle oil will be applied to soften and hydrate the cuticles. The speed of nail growth varies between individuals. As a benchmark, you should pay your nail therapist a visit at least once a month, says Eline Chong, a manicurist at Strip (03-7766 5119).
Nasty infections "The most common nail problems include bacteria such as paronychia, pseudomonas, fungal infections and ingrown nails. These infections often cause your nails to become yellow or green, thickened and flaky," says dermatologist Dr. Koh Chuan Keng. "As with ingrown nails, instead of growing straight out, the side edges of your nails curve inwards, causing inflammation and pain." Early detection is key: consult a dermatologist about any nail irregularity to prevent the progression of the problem. Oral antibiotics and anti-fungal creams may be prescribed to effectively treat the affected area. Surgery may be required to correct ingrown nails. "The nail therapists can spot certain obvious conditions such as ingrown nails but they aren't able to provide any treatment," says Chong. If you find yourself with a nail infection, stay away from the nail salons until you're fully recovered.

Mimicking a look is easy. Personalizing it isn't. Here's how you can pull off a big, bold style with personal flair. LAIDBACK ELEGANCE Robert Pattinson may look like he has just rolled out of bed, but the vegetarian vampire from Twilight knows how to make the nonchalant look presentable. A short-sleeved shirt, tie and dark jeans - stylish, tasteful, uncomplicated.

Looking for a bag that has timeless style? Canvas is your choice. The fabric isn't just trendy, but also durable and unpretentious. If purchased in dark brown or black, it can be paired with any bright or pale-colored attire. LACOSTE (RM599)
A blue jacket offers a modern appeal with plenty of exciting potential. What's more, it goes with everything. Make it casual with a T-shirt or a button-down shirt or - for more formal events - dress it up with a shirt and tie. DUNHILL (RM3, 350)
When it comes to timepieces, you want it to look contemporary but with enough classic features to outlast its generation. Clear and simple silhouette are features to look out for. Remember, leather or rubber strap is for casual outing and metal bracelet for formal. And yes, that means you need at least two watches. ORIS (RM9, 700) , RADO (RM10, 020) www.rado.com

Instead of shying away from harsh lighting because of bad skin tone, be a man and get a facial. BY JOHN NG A COMMON MISCONCEPTION AMONG MEN is that facial treatment isn't a necessity. The fact is, as much as we wish our three-step regime alone is sufficient to address any of our skin concerns, the reality is quite the contrary. According to Vivien Wong, General Manager of Bella and Men's Skin Care, Malaysia, what you do at home is only to maintain what is delivered from a "professional facial". Wong explains that the term refers to treatments you cannot perform at home. The use of advanced technology is one of it. "For example, the popular treatments among the men who come here are the Diamond Peel Therapy, which uses a wand engraved with fine diamonds to exfoliate the skin and the intense pulse light pigmentation treatment," says Wong. "These treatments offer more significant and long-lasting results."
Other factors which differentiate "home care" and "professional facial" include the massage and extraction procedures, says Wong. "Massage helps improve blood circulation and extraction is very much necessary especially when you live in a hot and humid country like this," says Wong. That said, extractions should be left to the professionals simply because if it is not done properly, the consequences could mean damaging the skin and causing scars.
THE PROCEDURES A professional facial normally involves cleansing, scrubbing, steaming, extracting, masque and moisturizing. The frequency of your visits to get these treatments really depends on your needs and expectations. Those of us who are looking to maintain the condition of our skin will only have to schedule in a facial every three to four weeks, while those who seek results and improvements will need one at least once a week. "Do not wash your face before a facial treatment especially when you are seeing your therapist for the first time so that he or she can assess your skin accurately," advises skin therapist for Lab Series, Rachael Yap. Besides that, do not go for treatments when you have burned or broken skin on your face, and avoid the steam room or sauna immediately before and after a facial as it may be to the detriment of the recently treated skin.
GOOD THERAPIST, BAD THERAPIST How can you tell the good and the bad? A good facial therapist should know how to communicate with the client before and during a treatment, says Wong. "This is especially important for first timers who don't know much about facial, for the therapist is able to explain the procedures involved clearly," Wong adds. The other criterion of a good therapist is "whether you personally feel comfortable with the therapist's handwork".
MAINTENANCE Maintaining a good skincare regime is important. More so if you want to prolong the result of your treatment. Begin by washing your face thoroughly with a cleanser that suits your skin type. Then, prep your skin with a toner before using a moisturizer to keep it hydrated. Other essentials you should also take into consideration are sunscreen, mask and eye balm. "Be careful with using expired products especially those containing fruit acids as they may cause skin allergies and rashes," says Wong. Labels: Looks |

How cool would it be if you could look like one of your favorite Hollywood celebrity? Well here at Men's Health we provide tips on how you could improve your looks and dress the way they do. It's not a 100% makeover that will guarantee you'll look like their double but at least now you'll know how to dress up like them.
Make your reserved formal ensemble chic and uber-cool. Here are essentials that will turn her head. Safe and sound
Despite Matt Damon's boyish appearance, the quirky actor can look convincingly sophisticated when needed. Nothing can go wrong with this plain beige suit and dark tie mix; which is perfect for most no-nonsense business occasions. Incorporate accessories that are appealing and unique to add sharpness to the look.

The surest way to get noticed in formal style is to wear a similarly refined, but not overpowering, scent. Within this silver glass bottle designed by Pierre Dinand is a classic. It's a refreshing and distinctly masculine fragrance with mandarin, jasmine, basil, sage and finishes with a warm, woodsy trail. (Calvin Klein Eternity 200ml - RM299)
Patterned and colorful ties can easily punch up your fit outfit. Pairing the same color shirt and tie is one way. Feeling experimental? Remember the neutral-colored shirts and bold ties are for subtly-colored shirts. (BOSS HUGO BOSS tie - RM350)

Malaysian singer and actor Rynn Lin shows how he maxes out his casual style
BY JOHN NG
The appeal of casual wear is its innate versatility. You will never look staid with the infinite array of t-shirts, pants and footwear out there. What's more, it allows a greater freedom to highlight your individuality compared to formal wear. Just ask Malaysian-born singer/songwriter Rynn Lin, 30 who says casual wear should not only be comfortable, but also project a style which makes his individuality instantly recognizable. "I don't have a style icon," he says, adding "I dress in the way which represents who I am. "Take a leaf out of Rynn's stylebook and let your casual get-up signify the sort of person you are - one who is focused and confident in his inner self and shows it in his dressing identity.
WEAR THIS WHEN YOU'RE GOING SHOPPING WITH HER: Plain, basic t-shirts may be fine for the gym but certainly not on a date. Opt for unique and interesting printed t-shirts to add some zest to your overall ensemble. Wear it with either a pair of light, distressed jeans for a casual look or a dark straight fit to look a bit more refined.

Essentials you need to achieve that perfect shave BY JOHN NG

TIP #1 Use a pre-shave to add a protective blanket to your skin and to keep those whiskers soft for having. It also reduces the friction between the blade and skin.
TIP #2 Use a post-shave. It will relieve any burn, dryness and irritation, and leave a nice scent for her to sniff.
TIP #3 Never dry shave if you can help it. If you do dry shave, calm it down with a soothing balm or lotion
TIP #4 Do not use disposable shavers because it's construct forces you to shave against the grain and irritates the skin. Besides, it's not eco-friendly.
