All Gummed Up

The American Heart Association recently stated that gum disease, contrary to reports, does not cause heart disease. But don’t toss the floss: A study from the United Kingdom shows that one common oral bacteria can trigger blood clots. The bug, Streptococcus gordonii, can enter your bloodstream through bleeding gums and make a molecule that mimics a clotting protein. If you see red when you brush, make a dentist appointment, says study author Howard Jenkinson.
