Bored to Tears
If you’re wondering where your marriage is headed, here’s a hint: Boredom at the 7-year mark is a sign of future dissatisfaction, reports a study in Psychological Science. A survey of 123 married couples found that those with higher levels of boredom at year 7 were more dissatisfied at year 16—whether or not there had been tensions or conflicts at year 7. “Feeling bored leads to changes in closeness with your partner, which leads to lower satisfaction,” says study author Irene Tsapelas PhD(c). “Couples grow close by sharing novel and challenging experiences,” she says. So seek out new activities you can do together, like rock climbing or foreign travel.
