Be Positively Powerful
Push. Lift. Crush. Hearing action verbs in a positive context while you lift weights may make you stronger, a study from the Institute of Cognitive Sciences in Lyon, France, suggests. Study participants who listened to sentences with positive action verbs experienced a significant boost in their grip strength. What’s more, when the participants heard similar sentences with negatively constructed verbs—for example, “don’t lift”—they showed no increase in strength. Researchers think that hearing action verbs in an affirmative context may activate certain parts of the brain responsible for controlling movement.
