Don’t Look in The Mirror

A mirror in front of a treadmill is good news and bad news. A new study in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise found that watching yourself on a treadmill may help you run more smoothly, but this can also make your workout less demanding. Runners who watched themselves in the mirror expended less energy and consumed less oxygen, says study co-author Daniel Eaves. On the other hand, those who watched either a reversed mirror image or a static image of themselves expended more energy. So use the mirror to refine technique, but for a harder workout, choose a treadmill where you can’t see yourself or other runners.
