Coffee Relieves Asthma

caffeine-ip

Coffee as a relaxant? For straining lungs, yes—in an important way. Caffeine is as effective as an inhaler at reducing symptoms of exercise-induced asthma, say researchers at Indiana University. When treadmill runners drank four or five 6-ounce cups of coffee 1 hour before exercise, their bronchial passages were significantly less constricted following the session. Yep, that’s a lot of joe. But drinking about half that amount should still help a man with exercise-induced asthma, says study author Timothy D Mickleborough PhD. Caffeine relaxes the smooth muscle in the airways, opening them so it’s easier to breathe.
