Cardiac Comeback

Old thinking: Heart muscle that dies during a heart attack is gone for good. New thinking: An injection may undo the damage from an infarction. When Children’s Hospital Boston researchers injected the protein neuregulin-1 into mice who’d had a heart attack, the rodents’ heart tissue began to regenerate. Our bodies naturally create neuregulin-1, but larger doses may be needed to spur heart cells to replicate. Human trials are under way.
