Even a slightly elevated heart rate may increase your risk of diabetes. In a 20-year Japanese study, people with resting heart rates above 80 beats per minute (bpm) were almost five times more likely to develop the disease. Resting heart rates in this range may interfere with your body’s use of insulin, says study author Hisashi Adachi, MD. If your resting heart rate is over 80 bpm, lower it with 3 days of interval training a week.
