Sunflower seeds aren’t just bird food; they can also help protect you from diabetes and heart disease. Northwestern University researchers in the US found that the magnesium-packed seeds can lower your risk of contracting metabolic syndrome (which can lead to the two conditions) by 31%, by regulating your blood sugar. Other salubrious seeds, such as pumpkin, flax and sesame, provide a similar defence against metabolic syndrome. A 50g handful should be enough.
