Improving core strength may decrease the severity of chronic back pain, according to a review in Physical Therapy. “Chronic back discomfort is known to be associated with weak deep-trunk muscles that support the spine,” says study author Luciana Macedo, PhD(c). Spinal-stability exercises, like planks, trigger those muscles and reduce pain.
