The classic retro trifle
The chintz curtain of the dessert world, there are unexpected nuggets of nutrition in the trifle. Fiber-rich bananas and pears lower cholesterol and blood pressure, whilst keeping your bowels healthy. Strawberries and raspberries contain cancer-bursting phytonutrients, and the combination of fruit slashes your risk of eye problems in later life by a third. The custard topping, rich in milk and eggs, is high in calcium and vitamin A, while a sprinkling of almonds delivers magnesium to ease blood flow. Just make sure you go easy on the sherry.
